Menopause and oral health

Menopause can be a reason why your teeth and gums change, even if you are doing everything "right".

Have you noticed that:
– gums are more sensitive or receding
– teeth seem to no longer feel as "strong"
– the body is tired, but tests say "everything is fine"
And no one can really explain why?

This is where most women feel alone, because symptoms are observed... not the system. In reality, something much deeper happens during menopause.

When estrogen drops, then:
• bone starts to break down faster than it rebuilds
• inflammation in the body rises (quietly, without pain)
• insulin sensitivity decreases → the body goes into "stress mode"
And now the most important part, which is hardly discussed: the jaw responds to this first. It is one of the bones that renews fastest in the body. This means that changes manifest there before they are seen in the hips or spine. So the mouth may be the first place that indicates there is a balance issue in the body.

Why aren't "everything is fine" test results enough? Because standard tests do not measure what truly matters.
For example:
aMMP-8 – an enzyme that indicates active gum inflammation. This can be high even before you have pain or bleeding
So inflammation may be present, but nobody looks there and this is where the feeling arises that "I'm doing everything right, but nothing works." This is not "aging," but a signal from the body. And a signal is not a problem, it is information that someone hasn't explained to you.

What can you already do today?
Start with simple things:

  1. Check your vitamin D levels
(not just "normal," but optimal ~100–150 nmol/L)

  2. Ask your dentist:
"What is my risk of gum disease?" not just "are there cavities or tartar?"

  3. Investigate your metabolism
(HOMA-IR provides much more information than just blood sugar)

And most importantly…
If you feel that something has changed, then trust that feeling. Your body is not working against you. It is trying to communicate with you.
If this topic resonated with you or someone close to you, please share it because too many women still believe that it’s all just "age,” but it can be understood and supported.
